Give Me That Mountain

Day two...

As soon as I was old enough, Dad signed me up for the Sarcoxie Lazy Bones little league team. They must have been short on players because there was no tryout (probably the only reason I made the team). My first game I was put in right field—terrified someone would hit a ball my direction. On my first at bat I struck out; by the time I could take a swing I'm certain the ball was already on its way back to the pitcher. On my second at bat I was hit by a pitch. On my third at bat I was hit by a pitch. Dad never let me quit anything midway through, but in this case he made an exception.

Day three...

A few years back Sherrel and I met an exceptional young couple. I was so impressed with their talent that I could easily see them as superstars for God. But as we began to develop a friendship, all the stuff coming against them began to surface. We counseled them intensely for a few months, but eventually they distanced themselves from us. I found out a few months ago they had divorced.

Day four...

If I want to be a part of a team of motivational speakers—on a national or international level—I have to have some real talent. I have to have some major human accomplishments—gold medals, best‐selling books, profitable business ventures. Ideally, I will have overcome uncommon difficulties and achieved uncommon success.

Day five...

My first exposure to celebrity was probably on the playground at my rural elementary school. I remember sitting, along with some of my classmates, against the fence behind home plate. I would push back hard against the wire as I felt the air from the baseball bat being swung back and forth in front of my face.

Day six...

As I'm eating lunch at my desk, a co‐worker walks up and tells me, “I have so many problems I just don't much feel like living.” After listening to his troubles I tell him, “You need to talk to a preacher. Do you have one? If you don't, I can see if my pastor will meet with you.”

Acting like We Believe

If every Christian in America was asked the question, “Do you believe the Bible?” the answer would probably be: “Yes.” Some people might even appear to be a little offended by being asked. I would certainly say, “Yes, I believe.” But what if, instead, every Christian was asked, “Do you act like you believe the Bible”?

Day one...

Did you ever wonder what it would be like to be a tire? (Sherrel rolls her eyes and says, “Where do you come up with this stuff?”) But think about it… seriously.

Day two...

The first house I built had a stone exterior. When the mason removed the polyethylene sheeting protecting the soffits from mortar, he unknowingly left about a square–foot piece up high on the wall. I saw that tattered plastic every time I was out in the yard, but I needed a ladder to get it down. So I just got used to it. I'm not even sure I removed it when I sold the house.

Day three...

Are you willing to consider you might have more control over your life than you think? Do you believe you could be in control of the situation if you were… say… imprisoned in North Korea?

Day four...

Are you sensing an aggression rising up on the inside? If you are just itching to say “No you don't, in Jesus' name!” to something trying to pin you against the wall, then you are in a good place. But it's not what we say that counts. It's the position we take. And to understand our position, we need to better understand Jesus' position as He walked this earth.

Day five...

God's answers are bigger than your questions. God's power is bigger than your need. God's grace is bigger than your weakness. God's love is bigger than your loneliness.

Thanks

Day one...

One of the most common lines in all of acting is the simple phrase, “Thank you.” Learning to give a convincing performance of being thankful when we are really not, has made us all into actors.
