Give Me That Mountain

Love Is…

Day four...

I remember asking Sherrel just before our first granddaughter was born, “How will our life be different after we become grandparents?” There's the babysitting… the eventual school activities…. Going along with every imagined reality I had about being a grandparent, were the feelings—the emotions telling me I had something wonderful ahead. (Our granddaughter is now two and one‐half months old and spending her first overnight tonight with Grandpa and Grandma. And I can say, “It feels really good.”)

Day five...

I have trouble saying, “I love you, Lord.” Does is shock you for me to make such a statement? When I start to say, “I love…” my words can seem cheap, shallow, inadequate—even disrespectful. And I want to ask Him, “How do I love You Lord? What does it look like to love You?”

Day six...

From yesterday's discussion, did you come up with any Bible verses you would guard with your life? What about John 3:16? “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” Is that verse valuable enough to die for? It has been for many of those martyrs throughout history who have refused to deny Jesus.

Hearing from God

Day one...

Do you need to hear from God? Is what you've been trying not working? Have you tapped out all your own resources?

Day two...

For several years of my life as a young man, everything I touched turned into gold. I was successful at whatever I put my hand to. And with each success my personal opinions increased in value. I was pretty good at hiding arrogance behind confidence, but had this continued unchecked… it would have eventually become necessary to start paying people if I wanted to keep them as friends.

Day three...

“Gwen grew up on this land. Every ravine, every rock formation, every grassy slope, every cluster of trees… every detail as familiar today as it was back then. Today, she needed something familiar to cling to—something to take her mind off her troubles. Her world had begun to fall apart—piece by piece, person by person. And she just needed a walk in the sunshine in a place of security… to grab hold of something, anything, she could count on.

Your Bible may or may not be open, but it is always “on.” It's always plugged in and ready to go. Through your Bible, you can hear from God any time and every time.

Day five...

I asked you yesterday about your attitude toward the Bible. Most of us do not understand our attitude toward the Bible. We have a sort of love/hate relationship. We love it, but we hate to read it (at least we act like we do). We'll defend it, but we won't depend on it.

Love at a Distance

Day one...

At the beginning of our Thursday night class, I asked the group, “What's been going on between you and the Lord?” One of the men spoke his concern over his thirteen‐year‐old daughter, who had been caught cutting in the school locker room. This father was separated from his daughter because of divorce. He was restricted in just how much he could protect her. I could sense the question, “What to do…?” forming on some of the other men's faces as well.

Day two...

When you love your children at a distance—when you are separated willingly or unwillingly from those you want to protect—you do not have to be a helpless bystander watching them play the game of life on their own. You can be on both their offensive and defensive teams in ways just as powerful as if they were under your physical care and protection.

Day three...

If you've never thought about being intentional with “favor” let me assure you that it works. To protect our children's privacy I won't go into details, but they experience the favor of man on a regular basis. Our children also experience the favor of God, on a regular basis. Sherrel and I are very intentional about praying for our children to have favor with both man and God, because it works. And it will work for your children also.

Day four...

After a phone conversation with one of my closest friends a few days ago, something he said stuck in my mind. I'm not quoting him exactly… basically he told me that our conversations were never predictable but always good.
