Give Me That Mountain

Love Is…

Day one...

Sherrel and I noticed that we were abusing the word “love” by attaching it to shoes, food, books, movies, and many other things in everyday life. So we established a rule in our house: The word “love” is reserved for people and for God. We “enjoy” everything else.

Day two...

I don't claim to fully understand human emotion; I just study the effect it has on my life and the lives of those around me. Human emotion is a powerful motivating force for each of us. Our emotions demand our attention—and will be heard, no matter what they drag us through in the process.

Day three...

We have certain expectations from those who claim to love us: Children expect their parents to provide them with food, clothing, and shelter. Husbands expect physical intimacy from their wives. Wives expect protection from their husbands. Friends expect what is shared in confidence to be kept in confidence. If you have healthy relationships with lots of people, your list of expectations will be long. If you have mostly unhealthy relationships, your list will be short.

Day four...

I remember asking Sherrel just before our first granddaughter was born, “How will our life be different after we become grandparents?” There's the babysitting… the eventual school activities…. Going along with every imagined reality I had about being a grandparent, were the feelings—the emotions telling me I had something wonderful ahead. (Our granddaughter is now two and one‐half months old and spending her first overnight tonight with Grandpa and Grandma. And I can say, “It feels really good.”)

Day five...

I have trouble saying, “I love you, Lord.” Does is shock you for me to make such a statement? When I start to say, “I love…” my words can seem cheap, shallow, inadequate—even disrespectful. And I want to ask Him, “How do I love You Lord? What does it look like to love You?”

Day six...

It has been for many of those martyrs throughout history who have refused to deny Jesus.

If You Are a Christian, You Already Have the Peace of God within You

Prayer on the Move. Day eleven...

I hate it when I see Christians suffering from emotional/mental distress. It's not right… and it's certainly not God.

Jesus Understands What It Feels like to Be Abandoned

Being Faithful. Day two...

I can't think of anything more painful—for me at least—than to think God has left me and might not come back. And it's a far more horrifying thought now than it was back when I didn't have much invested in my relationship with Him.

Working in Cooperation with God

Wanting What God Wants. Day nine...

My cousin Gary was the Missouri High School Rodeo Champion two times. As a younger wannabe cowboy myself, I looked forward to every opportunity I had to spend time with him.

Perception is Not the Same as Truth

A Change of Mind. Day one...

“How did you feel about …?” Have you ever asked that question of anybody? Of course you have. You have, I have, we all have. Maybe you were comforting a friend after a death, an accident, an illness, a business failure, or some family drama. Or maybe you were just talking to somebody with an interesting story and wanted to know, “How did that make you feel?”
